Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

During laser hair removal, heat energy penetrates your outer layer of skin to render the hair follicles beneath unable to grow hair.

The treatment is effective just about anywhere you have unwanted hair, including your:

  • Legs
  • Bikini area
  • Glutes
  • Feet and toes
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Shoulders
  • Underarms
  • Arms
  • Face

The number of sessions you’ll need depends on the location of your treatment, the density of your hair, and your skin type. Usually six or more sessions are needed to achieve your desired results.

You need multiple sessions because hair grows in cycles. Laser hair removal is most effective when hair is in a growth cycle; multiple sessions mean all of your hair gets targeted when most vulnerable.

Hormonal changes and other factors can trigger new hair growth, so you might need additional touch-up treatments from time to time.

How do I prepare for laser hair removal?

Before your laser hair removal session, you can shave, but you are instructed not to wax or pluck for about six weeks prior to your session. You want the hair follicles intact for the laser therapy to work.

Avoid sun exposure or tanning prior to your appointment. Tan skin makes the laser less able to target the pigment in your hair follicles, and your session is less effective. If you’re worried about discomfort, take an over-the-counter pain reliever about 30 minutes before your appointment.

What should I expect during laser hair removal sessions?

You wear protective goggles as the technician passes the laser device over your skin. You will feel tingling and a sharp sting, much like a rubber band snapping against your skin, during your treatment.

Although the procedure isn’t comfortable, it is well-tolerated by most people with an anesthetic or numbing cream.

You receive a cooling gel and/or ice packs following treatment to ease any uncomfortable sensations. You may have slight redness following a session, but it should fade quickly.

Laser hair removal is appropriate for most skin types and hair colors. Call Delta Medical Weight Management Center to schedule a consultation and learn if it’s the right treatment for you.
